MADINAH, 2 April — A group of secondary school students in the Madinah region brutally attacked four teachers leaving one of them unconscious. All the four were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries.
Some students from Al-Lahn Secondary School in Khaybar in Madinah Province ambushed a teacher who was on his way home from the school in the afternoon. Three of his colleagues, who were accompanying him, tried to intervene but failed to stop the attack.
The students were apparently waiting for the teacher on his way home after some provocation.
Bahjat Junaid, director general of education in the region, said the students were later taken in to police custody. The boys are being interrogated to find out the motive of their strange behavior, Bahjat said.
The matter will be referred to the governor of the region for appropriate action so that such wild behavior is not repeated. “Such unruly behavior is quite unbecoming of the students and they should know how to respect their teachers,” the official said.
The teacher had called a student abusive names but had apologized to him later, the official said. He said outsiders were suspected of involvement in the attack.
Ghalib Al-Muhammadi, governor of Khaybar, said he was awaiting a full report on the criminal act. Investigations are progressing, he added. The motive behind the attack is yet to be found out, the governor said.
According to sources at Khaybar General Hospital, three of the injured teachers were discharged after first-aid treatment, but one of them was admitted to the intensive care ward because he was unconscious. He was discharged later.
None of the students were taken to the hospital, the source added.
This is the third attack on teachers in the Madinah region in a year. In an earlier incident, the authorities had suspended four students from an intermediate school for a year after they attacked the school principal. The boys were provoked by the principal’s decision to dismiss them from the school on charges of bad behavior.
Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed had ordered a student and parent flogged for attacking a teacher after forcing themselves into his classroom earlier this year.
