JEDDAH, 3 April — A tribunal set up by the Directorate General of Traffic to try violators of traffic regulations in Jeddah will hold its first hearing today.

The tribunal will look into cases registered by police patrol teams and secret agents monitoring traffic flow in the city. It will also hear appeals by alleged violators against tickets issued to them. The tribunal will decide cases of traffic offenses until the Justice Ministry sets up separate traffic courts.

The tribunal will be headed by Col. Abdul Aziz Al-Obailan, director of traffic in Jeddah, and will have Lt. Col. Saeed Al-Qahtani, director of traffic division, and Lt. Col. Ali Al-Qarni, director of accidents division, as its members. Capt. Assam Mandurah will serve as the tribunal’s secretary.

The tribunal has summoned for today’s hearing three drivers who objected to charges registered against them by the traffic police. The charges included jumping of red lights, fleeing after being waved down by the traffic police and quarreling with a security official.

Mandurah said the defendants should appear in person and no representation would be allowed. This was to help the security men to establish the identity of the people involved, he said.
