COTABATO CITY, 23 April — The MILF announced yesterday that it had yet to receive an official notice on the offer made by Indonesian President Abdulrahman Wahid to host formal peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. MILF spokesman Eid Kabalu admitted, so far their sources on this matter are based only on published news item. Reports from national papers had it that President Wahid has offered the city of Menado in Indonesia to be the venue for the GRP and MILF peace talks tentatively set for June 24, 2001. Aside from Indonesia, other OIC member-state have expressed their willingness to assume the role of mediator, such as, Libya and other Middle East countries, report continued. Malaysia is almost assured of a continuing its role as a facilitator in the succeeding talks having hosted the exploratory talks that led to the signing of an “Agreement on the General Framework for the Resumption of the Peace Talks between the GRP and the MILF” on March 24, 2001. Earlier, the MILF also expressed openness to “shifting venues” if only to promote solidarity among OIC member states, particularly, those who have been actively involved in the peaceful political resolution of the Bangsamoro problem in South Philippines. Indonesia had been previously involved in the Mindanao problem having brokered the GRP-MNLF peace talks that led to the signing of the Final Peace Agreement on September 2, 1996. It also heads the OIC-Committee of the Eight that is looking into the Muslim problem in southern Philippines. Other members of the committee include Libya, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Brunei.
