MADINAH, 29 April — The Presidency of Girls’ Education has plans to extend maternity leave for teachers from two months to two years — two months with full pay and half pay for rest of the period.

Substitutes will be hired on a temporary basis and on hourly wages to replace the teachers availing of the maternity leave, sources at the presidency said.

The move follows growing complaints from women teachers who are forced to leave their infants to the care of housemaids at an early stage.

It also aims to cut down the number of foreign teachers by helping Saudi women remain on their jobs.
