KARACHI, 6 May— The Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy (ARD) has summoned a meeting in Lahore next week to decide its future line of action, said the acting chief of the Sharif’s faction of the Pakistan Muslim League, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, while talking to this correspondent on phone from Multan. He claimed that the government was delaying the release of some 4,000 ARD activists arrested to pre-empt a May Day rally in Karachi. The administration has generally been slow in acting on the directive issued by Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider, he said. Hashmi said that political parties asking the military to quit had succeeded in mobilizing the people. The government’s attempt to crush the opposition had backfired, he claimed. Karachi had to be placed under an unannounced curfew to pre-empt the rally. Hashmi felt that the ARD had achieved success. “In days ahead, we will certainly raise the level and intensity of our campaign and use other means to achieve our cause.”
