KARACHI, 11 May — Police arrested Jeay Sindh leader Dr. Qadir Magsi and 100 others to pre-empt a sit-in to protest water shortage in Sindh. Officials said Jeay Sindh and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement had jointly planned to stage a sit-in on the country’s main highway near Sukkur. They wanted to block the highway and disrupt traffic between Sindh and the rest of the country. The arrests were made in Larkana, an upper Sindh town, some 50 miles from Sukkur. Witnesses said Magsi and nearly 300 demonstrators had tried to take out a procession to protest water crisis and demand Sindh’s share in irrigation water. Police baton-charged and tear-gassed the protesters who pelted police with stones. Meanwhile, the PPP claimed in a press release yesterday that a complete strike was observed in the town following its call to the people to protest the recent arrests in Sindh.
