NEW DELHI, 19 May — Women candidates outshone their male counterparts in the Civil Services (Main) Examination — 2000 by bagging the top two slots, apart from figuring in fourth and seventh position too.

The results announced by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) placed Vijayalakshmi Bidari, an engineering graduate from Bangalore, Karnataka, in the top slot, while Shahla Nigar, an M. Phil, who hails from Patna, Bihar, captured second position. In the fourth position is Smita Das from Chandigarh, and Arti Kanwar from Dehi in the seventh.

And as if this was not enough, there are eight women candidates among the top 20.

Of a total 427 seats, women aspirants accounted for 85 positions. The list of 427 successful candidate in the UPSC (Main) Exams includes 128 belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC), 58 to the Scheduled Castes (SC), 34 to Scheduled Tribes (ST) and nine to Muslim.
