NEW DELHI, 28 May —  The newly-formed People’s Front is planning to adopt a common minimum program (CMP) before the next parliamentary elections to broaden its base. The front is all set to finalize its CMP in its scheduled meeting here on Tuesday.

The meeting which is likely to be attended by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) leaders Harkishen Singh Surjeet and Jyoti Basu, Samajwadi Party’s Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh, Communist Party of India’s (CPI’s) A.B.   Bardhan along with other left leaders is expected to give a final touch to the CMP.

The CMP is expected to focus on economic issues and will bring out the loopholes in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government’s economic liberalization policies.

The decision of formulating a CMP was taken in April and a core group comprising Mulayam Singh, Surjeet, Bardhan along with two former premiers V.P. Singh and H.D. Deve Gowda, was set up for the purpose. Though a draft has already been prepared, it was not adopted since all the leaders were busy in recently-concluded assembly polls in five states.

Since, the elections are over now, the leaders are busy in giving final touches to the CMP, which they think will help in attracting other political parties to the front.
