JEDDAH, 7 January — An unemployed Saudi youth, who tried to kill himself on Thursday evening, is admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital here with gunshot wounds.
The 30-year-old youth, identified only as Ibrahim, is still unconscious and remains in critical condition, Al-Madinah newspaper reported yesterday. Doctors said the bullet had pierced his brain.
Sources close to the youth said he might have tried to commit suicide because of his disappointment in not finding a permanent job.
Ibrahim is an intermediate school graduate and he speaks fluent English. He has been switching from one job to another during the past several years and has not been able to marry and settle down, they said.
However, his passport indicates that he had been making a number of journeys abroad.
Ibrahim's brother Yahya denied family quarrels as the reason for the suicide attempt. Yahya said his brother was depressed because of his difficulty to get a satisfactory job. He said he used to give his brother, who lived with one of their relatives in the Banu Malik district, enough money.
Yahya said the relative was on telephone when he heard the gunshot. He rushed to Ibrahim's room, but found it locked from inside. He immediately called the police and a Red Crescent team also came with them.
The relative who was taken into custody after the incident for questioning was released on bail, the newspaper said.
Meanwhile, a widow in her fifties committed suicide a few days ago in Madinah. The woman, who lived with her son, climbed on a table, hanged herself from the hook of illumination lamps on the ceiling and kicked the table away, the Okaz newspaper reported yesterday.
