JEDDAH, 9 January — A Saudi family lost SR45,000 in cash and valuable jewelry they kept in their car which was parked near a police station in the holy city of Makkah.
Misfar Muflih Al-Kubra and his family were in Makkah to perform Umrah during the last days of Ramadan. They parked their car in the Al-Sharaie parking lot, a few kilometers from the Haram Mosque. They left their money and other valuables including jewelry in the glove compartment of their car fearing that they might lose them in the huge crowd, Al-Jazirah Arabic daily said in a report.
When they returned after the Umrah a few hours later, they found everything including the money for their travel expenses was stolen. Misfar immediately reported the matter to the duty officer in the nearby police station. The thieves have not yet been arrested, the paper said.
Burglars arrested: In Hafr Al-Baten, police arrested a five-member gang of burglars with valuable jewelry and a huge sum in cash stolen from a house in the city. All members of the family, to whom the house belonged, had died in a recent car accident, according to Al-Jazirah.
The burglars targeted the deserted house for their operations. A relative checking the house a day after the burglary found the doors open and everything inside stolen. He lodged a complaint with the city police who tracked down the thieves and recovered the stolen articles and the money from them, the paper said.
