DAMMAM, 17 June — Students of Rahima Academy, a prestigious educational institution in the Eastern Province, achieved the first position in the Math League organized by the Near East and South Asia Schools, an organization which promotes quality education.
According to the school principal, Norman Edwards, students from 11th and 12th grades participated in the league.
The result of the competition was announced at the NE/SA Annual Teachers’ Conference held at Istanbul, Turkey. The student members of the successful Rahima Academy team included Sakina Naqvi, Yaser Kabakibo, Adeeb Ibrahim, Ghaith Chukfeh, Chi Hyun Ahn and Murad Ayoub. Eugene Wright, a math and physics teacher at the academy, coached the team.
The NE/SA Schools Math League was started 12 years ago and there are now about 40 schools from many countries taking part. The math questions posed to the competitors put emphasis on reading and interpreting information, sorting and organizing information, non-routine problem solving, real-life math problems and a wide variety of mathematical concepts.
At Rahima Academy, all senior classes take part and the results are analyzed and discussed in the class after each round of the competition. The top scorers are congratulated at the school assembly.
This is the first year that 11th and 12th graders from Rahima Academy have entered the league which they won by one point against an international school in Turkey. Countries represented in this year’s league included Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Cyprus, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Latvia and Switzerland.
