KARACHI, 26 June — Traffic between Sindh and Balochistan remained suspended for several hours yesterday after some 300 drivers of buses and vans blocked the RCD Highway to protest alleged police excesses. The protesters demanded withdrawal of the toll tax levied recently and accused the police of extortion and harassment. The protesters parked their vehicles on the highway early morning blocking the inter-provincial traffic. Vehicles carrying grain and petrol tankers were held up on either side of the highway. A large number of factory workers were stranded because of the traffic disruption. A spokesman for the protesters said it was a token protest and threatened more such protests if the government failed to meet their demands. Police and paramilitary rangers were deployed to prevent the situation from taking an ugly turn.
