RIYADH, 27 June — Senior officials from the justice ministries of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council reviewed yesterday a proposal to set up a GCC coordination committee on human rights “The formation of the human rights panel will ensure greater coordination among the GCC member states on human rights situation,” said a statement released here by the GCC General Secretariat. The justice officials are currently meeting in Manama to discuss a number of issues including unification of judicial systems.

The Kingdom has already set up a human rights body to make an internal assessment of the rights situation and to keep vigil on rights abuses in the country, which employs more than 6.5 million foreign workers.

The statement said the Manama meeting would also map out a strategy for closer judicial cooperation among member nations. The meeting discussed adoption of a unified legal system based on Shariah. The meeting will discuss a range of other subjects including the legal profession, exchange of legal experts and training programs,
