RIYADH, 3 July —Lucent Technologies yesterday nominated two undergraduate Saudi students for the “Lucent Global Sciences Scholars Program” for the year 2001. The program is among the world’s largest annual talent competitions designed to support students pursuing careers in information and communications technology.

Majid Ali Muhammad Albahkali of King Saud University, Riyadh, and Abdulmalik Abdul Rahman Al-Malki of King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah, will join over 100 students chosen from all over the world as scholars under this program. They will be given the opportunity to learn about new technologies and meet award-winning researchers of Bell Labs at a ‘Global Science Summit’ on July 23 in the United States.

“This has been the second consecutive year that two undergraduate students from Saudi Arabia were selected for this program”, said Michael C. Craft, president of Lucent Technologies International Inc. in Saudi Arabia. He said two students from the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals were named Lucent Global Science Scholars last year.

Craft said, “the Global Science Program demonstrated Lucent’s commitment to education in the Kingdom by recognizing outstanding students, particularly in the area of science and technology. The awards build recognition for Lucent as a business that strives for excellence while on a mission to develop next generation communications network and the next generation of technologists who will run them”.

The program was launched in 1998 funded by the Lucent Technologies Foundation, the charitable arm of the Lucent Technologies. Its primary goal is to help young people around the world to meet the challenges of social changes. In 2000, the foundation contributed about $50 million worldwide toward youth development programs.
