JEDDAH, 10 July — It’s been around for over a decade; can you believe that? But unfortunately, until this day some people haven’t even heard of Caramel. It’s a pity really because it’s cute place. Lucky for you though, I’m about to broaden your horizons and tickle your taste buds.

Where should I begin? Well the place is really small. When you first enter, you find a wonderful display of all the yummy treats they have in store for you.

They’ve got a wide selection of salteens like mini croissants and cumin sticks. They also have small cakes like the amazing cappuccino which you’ll love if you’re a coffee fan. Let’s not forget the tarts, dates and excellent cakes they offer.

As for the dates, they are pretty special and very unique; a true delicacy. They have dates that are stuffed and covered with chocolate. Some are filled with a corn flakes filling. Others have caramel in them. They even have dates coated with caramel and filled with nuts like almonds and pistachios. But they only make them to order.

They also make some magnificent petit soufflés to order. They make orange soufflé, caramel, chocolate, banana, and even pistachio. As for their cakes: The highest price is only SR165. They have chocolate, vanilla and caramel naturally. Apparently lots of sweets there are made with caramel which isn’t surprising considering the name of the place.

So as I was saying, it’s small. On the left you have the men’s section and opposite to it is the family section separated by some pink paravans. In my opinion they do nothing for the decor but if privacy is what they’re looking for than so be it. As for the atmosphere, it’s cheerful. There’s a strip of blue neon lighting along the ceiling. There are only about five tables. The color scheme is basically black and pink although the walls are decorated with small colored tiles. It looks like some sort of modern diner. I like the fact that I can watch the waiters make the coffee and create the mouthwatering crepes. It’s also nice to have them close by in case you need them. As for music, they play some sappy love songs most of the time.

The service is “with a smile” but they could speed it up a bit if you know what I mean. They only serve light things. Basically sandwiches, crepes both sweet and savory, cocktails and desserts. Otherwise you could order something from the display. I had an out of this world chocolate lover’s dream dessert called chocolate tart. It’s a scrumptious buttery crust filled with melted chocolate and decorated with a tiny edible gold paper. I’m sure your kids will love it.

The sandwiches are of standard goodness. My sisters love their egg sandwiches. I always order the tuna; let’s just say that I’ve had better. Their club sandwich is supposedly the best, although I don’t like the combination of eggs and cheese. Their crepes are something else! They have a good variety. Pinnar is spinach and cheese, Mozart is three kinds of cheese and Margherita is quite similar to a pizza. Farmhouse is chicken and mushroom.

As for the sweet ones, they have choconero which is just a crepe with chocolate along with a scoop of fantastic ice cream. Then there’s supreme which is superb in my friend’s opinion. Samba is a crepe with banana, honey and lemon sauce. Rosetti is a crepe that rekindled my love for strawberries. It’s filled with vanilla ice cream and smothered with a strawberry sauce. It is sublime! You see the ice cream they serve is homemade and quite delicious. It has a very distinctive taste.
