KARACHI, 13 July — The National Security Council, which the military government of Gen. Pervez Musharraf has just reconstituted, will be a supra body, keeping a vigil on the performance of the future government in Pakistan, says Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider. According to an official notification, the council comprises the three service chiefs, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee, the president, and the four provincial governors. Its first major move was to endorse the action taken so far by Musharraf for the ensuing summit conference with India. Politicians, except for a few, have been resisting the move for any kind of role for the army in the conduct of the civilian affairs. Major political parties like the PPP, the PML-N, the MQM of Altaf Hussain, and the Jamat-e-Islami, have been asking the military to go back and hand over power to the elected representatives of the people. Musharraf, who donned the mantle of presidentship last month, has promised elections before October next year, but has yet to spell out its format.
