ALKHOBAR, 15 July  — A team of Saudi doctors have successfully removed a tumor the size of a football from a Saudi patient’s spleen, the Saudi Press Agency reported yesterday.

The 65-year-old man was in stable condition after the surgery, which SPA said was rarely performed in the Kingdom. It said the tumor, weighing about two kilograms, had attached itself to the man’s pancreas, intestines and stomach.

Dr. Abdul Hameed Al-Muemin, a consultant surgeon at the Saad Specialist Hospital in Alkhobar, where the operation was performed, said the medical team took six hours to remove the tumor. He said the patient had already left the hospital after the operation, adding that he enjoyed good health.

Mueen Al-Sanie, chairman of the hospital’s board of directors, told SPA that the success of the operation reflected the expertise of the hospital’s doctors. “Saudi specialists at our hospital have proved that they are not inferior to any other doctors,” he added. (AN)
