MANILA, 25 July — Weather officials yesterday raised storm alerts over several provinces in northern Luzon as they warned of the approach of a new weather disturbance.
Storm Huaning (international name: Yutu), packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour, was tracked 230 kilometers west-southwest of Basco, Batanes as of 4 p.m. yesterday, said the weather bureau Pagasa.
Storm warning signal No. 2 was hoisted over the Batanes Islands, the Calayan Islands, northwestern Cagayan, Apayao and Ilocos Norte.
Storm signal No. 1 was in effect over the provinces of Abra, Benguet, Ifugao, Ilocos Sur, Kalinga, La Union, Mountain Province, Pangasinan and the rest of Cagayan.
Pagasa said Huaning was moving in a west-northwesterly direction at 15 kph and was expected to be at 530 kms northwest of Laoag, Ilocos Norte early today.
The storm forecast to induce rains especially over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas, said the Pagasa, which stands for Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
Huaning's arrival comes at a time when the northern Philippines is still recovering from destruction caused by a stronger typhoon early this month.
