RIYADH, 27 June — A new scholarship will be instituted by the British Business Group in Saudi Arabia to mark the golden jubilee of Queen Elizabeth.
This was announced by British Ambassador Sir Derek Plumbly at a function here last night to name 15 recipients of this year’s Chevening Scholarship awards, administered by the British Council.
The 15 Chevening scholars include six Saudi women. The scholarship, of one-year duration, will enable them to pursue Master’s courses in business administration, mechanical engineering, computer science, health care and information technology. The ambassador said the scholarship program is part of the British government’s policy to promote Saudi-British relations.
Dr. David Burton, director of the British Council, told Arab News that the new scholarship scheme will be of one-year term with a cumulative value of £15,000 (SR83,000).
"The selection process is under way," he said.
Dr. Burton said Dr. Muhammad Al-Yamani of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University in Riyadh is the winner of this year’s Prince of Wales scholarship for the study of "Islam and the West".
The scholarship program, he said, reflects Prince Charles’ interest in fostering better understanding between Britain and the Muslim countries, especially Saudi Arabia.
