Gang of phone thieves held: Police recovered a large number of mobile phones from a hideout after they arrested three young Saudis in Makkah recently. A special investigation team kept mobile shops under surveillance for several days following repeated complaints from shopkeepers about vanishing phones. One evening, a motorbike parked near a phone shop aroused the police team’s suspicion. Nearby, they found a suspicious character casing the area. At the sight of police the man fled on his motorbike but the police team caught him after a long chase. The man led the police to two other members of the gang who were waiting for him at a pre-arranged place. Upon questioning, the gang confessed to stealing mobile phones and selling them at the used goods market.
Valuables stolen from apartment: Several valuables were stolen from an apartment in Alkhobar on Wednesday by a thief who entered the house through an open hole made for installing an air-conditioner. Police have registered a case and started investigations.
Disguised overstayer caught: A recent traffic accident in Bani Malik revealed that one of the passengers in the car was an overstaying foreigner disguised as a Saudi. The owner of the car said the man wearing Saudi dress had asked for a lift while he was returning home from the city. On the way the car met with an accident. When the traffic patrol asked for the ID of the man he confessed that he did not have any paper as he was an overstayer.
Afghan bike rider killed: An Afghan expatriate died instantly when his speeding motorbike rammed on to an electric pole on the Sail road on Thursday. His body was transferred to the Shershoura hospital while police investigations are under way to ascertain the cause of the death.
51 held in Makkah for begging: Fifty-one beggars of various nationalities were arrested inside the Grand Mosque on Friday. They exploited the unusually huge crowd present at the mosque that day to evoke the sympathy of visitors and pilgrims. Some pretended to be disabled while others told their victims that they did not have money to buy food or that pickpockets had stolen their cash. The most ingenious among them were 10 persons who operated at prime locations with charity boxes displaying labels of some charity programs. All were arrested.
Yemeni extradited: Saudi Interpol has extradited a Yemeni national accused of murder charges to his country, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. Brig. Ali Al-Obaishy, acting director of Saudi Interpol, said the Yemeni came to the Kingdom on a work visa after the murder that took place in Yemen. The extradition comes in line with the security cooperation between the two countries.
