KARACHI, 28 July — The Pakistan People’s Party of former Premier Benazir Bhutto has kicked off the campaign for elections to party slots ahead of general elections slated for October. The workers and leaders of the party have set up election camps to canvass for their candidates contesting various party posts.
The party said nomination papers have been sent to all the district, provincial and central election authorities for distribution among the candidates.
Party office-bearers at the district level are preparing voters’ list. The party said that those who have been working as members of the party for the last eight years would be eligible as voters and candidates. The party leaders said that three ballot papers would be provided to each voter to elect district, provincial and central leadership and executive committee members respectively.
The PPP declared that the members could contest the election for any post except the chairmanship of the party. The party has already decided that Benazir Bhutto would remain as chairperson of the party and she would be elected again unanimously.
Sources said that two vice chairmen of the party would be elected from Sindh and the NWFP while the secretary general could be elected from Punjab. Sources said that Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi or Atizaz Ahsan could be elected secretary-general of the party while Acting Secretary-General Raza Rabbani could be a candidate for deputy secretary-general.
The contest for the presidency of PPP Sindh could be tough. The contestants are former Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and provincial president Nisar Khuhro.
