RIYADH, 4 August — Thieves broke into the headquarters of the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) on Friday night and decamped with SR200,000 in cash after assaulting the watchman on duty.
It is learned that three thieves sneaked into WAMY’s office located on Dhabab Street through the rear window. When challenged by the Pakistani watchman, the three assaulted him. He was later hospitalized with some injuries.
Yesterday morning, police were seen preventing people from going into the building as an investigation got under way.
The identity of the thieves has not yet been established but it is believed to be the handiwork of someone familiar with WAMY’s operations. This is the second incident of its kind within a week. Last week, a thief broke into the house of a Keralite teacher working for an international school while he was away on vacation. His house was ransacked.
Riyadh normally experiences a rash of burglaries during July-August when people are away on their summer vacation. The problem is compounded by the presence of a large number of overstayers.
According to official statistics, Riyadh region tops the list of recorded theft cases. Of a total 27,140 cases of thefts and burglaries reported all over the Kingdom last year, over 12,500 cases occurred in Riyadh region .alone. Besides cash and valuables, sheep and cattle were also stolen.
