BOSTON, 17 May 2003 — Pedro Martinez allowed five hits in six shutout innings to rebound from a rare poor start to lead the Boston Red Sox past the Texas Rangers 12-3 to complete a three-game sweep in American League action on Thursday. Martinez (4-2) struck out eight and walked just one before leaving with a 10-0 lead.

Only one runner made it to third base as he was dominant coming off a tough outing in Minnesota, where he allowed five runs on eight hits in five innings. David Ortiz had three hits and two RBI to lead the offense for the Red Sox.

Nomar Garciaparra had two hits and drove in three runs, while Bill Mueller and Jason Varitek both had two hits and drove in two runs. Boston had 16 hits in the game, including four doubles and two triples, off five Texas pitchers.

Alan Benes (0-1) went just three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. Carl Everett hit his 13th homer of the season for the Rangers, while Todd Greene also homered.

Yankees 10 Angels 4

In New York, Alfonso Soriano and Todd Zeile both homered, had two hits and drove in two runs as the Yankees touted the Anaheim Angels 10-4. Derek Jeter had three hits and drove in a run for New York, while Raul Mondesi added two hits and two RBI.

Jeff Weaver (3-2) went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and four walks. Jeff DaVanon homered and had three hits for the Angels. Aaron Sele (1-1) was mauled for eight runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Athletics 11 Tigers 2

In Detroit, Barry Zito pitched six strong innings as the Oakland Athletics thumped the Tigers 11-2. Zito (6-3) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Eric Byrnes had a three-run triple to key a six-run first inning and had four RBI, while Scott Hatteberg had two hits and drove in two runs. Adam Bernero (0-6) went 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs and eight hits to take the loss.

Royals 9 Twins 5 (14 innings)

In Minneapolis, Raul Ibanez drove in the go-ahead run with a single to start a four-run 14th inning, giving the Kansas City Royals a 9-5 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who had 14 hits. D.J. Carrasco went 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief for the win.

Cristian Guzman had four hits for Minnesota. While Doug Mientkiewicz drove in a pair of runs. Johan Santana (2-1) was the loser, allowing four runs on five hits over three innings.

Devil Rays 9 Blue Jays 5

In Toronto, Rocco Baldelli and Toby Hall both drove in two runs during a six-run second inning as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Blue Jays 9-5. Jared Sandberg also drove in two runs for the Devil Rays. Jesus Colome (1-1) tossed 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief for the win, allowing just two hits.

Doug Davis (1-2) went 1 2/3 innings and was hit for seven runs on seven hits to take the loss. Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer for Toronto.

White Sox 8 Orioles 2

In Chicago, Bartolo Colon pitched a five-hitter over eight innings and the White Sox scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat the Baltimore Orioles 8-2. Colon (4-3) allowed two runs and struck out five and walked one. Frank Thomas homered for Chicago and drove in two runs, while Magglio Ordonez had two hits and three RBI.

Sidney Ponson (4-3) pitched six innings, allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Larry Bigbie hit a two-run homer for the Orioles.

Mariners 9 Indians 1

In Cleveland, Edgar Martinez hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners survived a two and a half hour rain delay to beat the Indians 9-1. Martinez added a sacrifice fly for the Mariners, who were happy to finish the game after it was almost postponed with them leading 7-0 in the fourth inning.

Randy Winn and Jeff Cirillo both drove in two runs for Seattle. Giovanni Carrara (2-0) tossed three shutout innings of relief to pick up the win. Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook (2-3) was the loser, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing seven runs on five hits. Omar Vizquel homered for the Tribe’s lone run.
