WASHINGTON, 19 May 2003 — The US embassies in Bahrain and Oman yesterday urged Americans in the Gulf states to be on guard for possible terrorist attacks following deadly suicide attacks in Saudi Arabia and Morocco.
The embassies made no mention of specific threats in either country but said the attacks in Riyadh and Casablanca were indicative of the heightened danger posed by terrorists and that US citizens needed to augment their security. The embassy in Manama said in notice distributed to Americans in Bahrain that “while we have no specific information that would lead us to believe that an attack is likely to occur in Bahrain, the embassy encourages American citizens to remain vigilant.”
In a similar notice to Americans in Oman, the embassy in Muscat said US citizens should be aware that terrorists are increasingly focusing on “soft” or civilian targets as was the case in Riyadh and Casablanca.
