KUWAIT CITY, 20 May 2003 — US Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet visited Kuwait yesterday for “consultations” as part of a regional tour, a source at the American Embassy here said. “He’s here and he’s in the region for consultations,” the source told AFP, without elaborating.
Tenet met with Kuwait’s First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and Interior Minister Sheikh Mohammed Khalid Al-Sabah, the state news agency KUNA reported. Al-Watan newspaper reported today that Tenet would visit Kuwait for “a few hours” as part of a regional tour also including Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Mass Grave Remains: Meanwhile, a Kuwaiti official said some of the remains discovered in a mass grave in Iraq are to be brought to Kuwait this week to determine whether they were those of prisoners taken from the emirate during Iraq’s 1990-1991 occupation. “Samples of the remains will be brought here either tomorrow or Wednesday,” Abdul Hamid Al-Attar, spokesman for the national committee for Kuwait’s missing and POWs, told AFP.
Attar said the samples would undergo forensic testing in Kuwait and that until then, there can be no confirmation that the bodies were those of more than 600 people taken prisoner during the seven-month occupation.
