MILWAUKEE, 23 May 2003 — Geoff Jenkins added to San Diego’s woes by belting three home runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-0 rout of the floundering Padres in the National League on Wednesday.
It was San Diego’s eighth straight loss and 16th in 18 games.
Jenkins homered in his first three trips to the plate, in the first, fourth and sixth innings, all served up by Jake Peavy (4-4).
He grounded out and struck out in his final two at-bats, failing to seize a rare four-homer game, a feat achieved only 15 times in major league history.

In Pittsburgh, Jack Wilson and Brian Giles belted sixth-inning homers to pace the Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Both blasts were served up by Kerry Wood (4-2), who again failed to notch his 50th career victory.

In Montreal, Ron Calloway doubled to drive in the go-ahead run as the Expos thumped Florida 7-2, handing the Marlins their fifth straight loss. Calloway connected off Carl Pavano (3-5) in the fourth frame in front of only 5,282 fans.

In rainy New York, Tony Clark’s single in the last of the ninth inning plated the deciding run as the Mets edged the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4. Clark connected off Terry Adams (0-2), emptying the Mets’ bench.

In Cincinnati, Austin Kearns’ bases-loaded double highlighted a six-run fourth inning as the Reds overwhelmed the Atlanta Braves 9-3 on manager Bobby Cox’s 62nd birthday. All six runs were charged to Braves starter Mike Hampton (2-2).

In Houston, St. Louis right-hander Woody Williams (6-0) notched a personal-best ninth straight victory stretching back to last season as the Cardinals defeated the Astros 7-4. The Astros did not go down easily, loading the bases in the ninth inning.
Albert Pujols was the hitting hero, homering and singling to drive in four runs. He took Pete Munro (3-2) deep in the opening frame with two aboard.

In Phoenix, Marquis Grissom went deep twice to score three runs as the San Francisco Giants blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-0. Grissom’s first was off Miguel Batista (3-3), who went six innings.

In Los Angeles, Kazuhisa Ishii (4-1) worked six-plus innings, striking out eight as the Dodgers edged the Colorado Rockies 3-2 to clinch their season-high sixth straight triumph. Jason Jennings (3-4) took the loss despite going the distance for Colorado.

In Boston, Roger Clemens notched his 299th victory in the city he called home for 13 years to guide the New York Yankees to a 4-2 triumph over the Boston Red Sox in the American League on Wednesday. Clemens (6-2), the six times Cy Young Award winner once a favorite of the Boston fans, worked six innings, allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out seven. Raul Mondesi singled in the seventh inning off Tim Wakefield (4-2) to plate Jorge Posada with the go-ahead run as the Yankees again assumed sole possession of first place in the East Division with a record of 29-17.

In Oakland, the Minnesota Twins rallied with two eighth-inning runs to edge the Athletics 4-3. Dustan Mohr’s single off Chad Bradford (2-3) plated Luis Rivas with the go-ahead run in the eighth.

In Cleveland, CC Sabathia and three relievers combined to blank the Detroit Tigers, the Indians romping home 4-0.
Sabathia (3-2) left after six innings because of a sprained left ankle. Omar Vizquel drove in Cleveland’s first run and Shane Spencer plated two more. Jeremy Bonderman (2-7) was charged with three of the four runs.

In Chicago, the White Sox rallied from an early 5-1 deficit to dump the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5. The Sox won it on Carlos Lee’s two-run homer off Cliff Politte (1-3) in the eighth inning. Lee doubled earlier to plate a third run.
Rangers 8 Devil Rays 7
In Arlington, Mark Teixeira collected four RBIs on a homer and triple as the Texas Rangers outlasted the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 8-7 for their fifth straight win.
But it was Ruben Sierra’s single in the seventh inning off Jesus Colome (1-2) that delivered the deciding run.

In Anaheim, Tony Batista knocked in three runs with a double and a single as the Baltimore Orioles hung on to beat the Angels 7-6. Sidney Ponson (5-3) was staked to a 5-0 lead and made it stand up for the win.
Royals 14 Mariners 5
In Seattle, Carlos Beltran knocked in six runs with a pair of three-run homers as the Kansas City Royals crushed the Mariners 14-5. Beltran’s first blast came off loser Freddy Garcia (3-6). Chris George (5-3) worked the minimum five innings for the victory.
