DETROIT, 2 June 2003 — Dmitri Young homered and drove in the winning run with a single as the Detroit Tigers edged the New York Yankees 4-2 in American League action on Saturday.

Young went 3-for-4 with two RBI to help the Tigers (14-37) snap a three-game losing streak and beat the Yankees for just the second time in the last 11 meetings.

New York’s three-game winning streak came to an end as the Yankees remained half a game ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East standings despite the loss.

Adam Bernero (1-6) finally ended a team-record 17-game winless starting streak by get a win for the first time since beating Montreal June 10, 2002.

He went seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.

Franklyn German survived a shaky ninth inning to pick up his third save.

Former Tiger Jeff Weaver, battling for a spot in the Yankees rotation, took the loss.

Weaver (3-4) went seven innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk in his first game against his former team.

In Toronto, Dave Berg homered and drove in four runs as the Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 10-7. Mike Bordick added a two-run homer for the Blue Jays, who went 21-8 in May.

Athletics 7 Royals 6

In Kansas City, Eric Byrnes hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Oakland Athletics past the Kansas City Royals 7-6. Byrnes extended his hitting streak to 21 games with the homer.

Mariners 5 Twins 2

In Minneapolis, Edgar Martinez and Ichiro Suzuki both homered to lead the Seattle Mariners to their fifth straight win, 5-2 over the Minnesota Twins.

Ryan Franklin (4-3) got the win, going seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk.

In St. Petersburg, Kevin Appier scattered eight hits over 8 2/3 innings to lead the Anaheim Angels past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-1.

Appier (4-2) allowed one run while walking four and striking out one. Travis Lee’s RBI double with two out in the ninth ended his shutout and complete game attempt.

In Baltimore, Rick Helling tossed seven solid innings as the Orioles survived a rain delay of more than two hours to beat the Texas Rangers 7-1. Helling (3-4) gave up one run on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts.

Seo Tames Atlanta Bats

Jae Seo scattered six hits over eight plus innings and Tsuyoshi Shinjo had a two-run double as the New York Mets cooled off the Atlanta Braves 4-2 in National League action on Saturday.

Atlanta (37-18) had its three-game winning streak snapped as the Braves failed to hit a home run, ending May with a record-tying 55 for the month.

Atlanta tied the record held by the New York Giants in July 1947 and the St. Louis Cardinals in April 2000.

Seo (2-2) allowed two runs and one walk and didn’t strike out a batter for the win.

Armando Benitez got the last three outs for his 16th save.

Seo won for the first time in six weeks as he continues to try and rebound from reconstructive elbow surgery that kept him from pitching for close to two years.

In St. Louis, Brian Giles hit a three-run homer to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Cardinals 4-3.

Kip Wells (2-2) went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout for the win. Mike Williams tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his 15th save.

Marlins 3 Reds 2

In Miami, Dontrelle Willis tossed a five-hitter over seven innings and homered to lead the Florida Marlins over the Cincinnati Reds 3-2.

Willis (3-1) allowed one run with eight strikeouts and broke a 1-1 tie with his solo homer in the fifth. Juan Encarnacion had three hits, while Braden Looper pitched the ninth for his ninth save.

Danny Graves (3-4) went 7 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits with three walks.

Cubs 1 Astros 0 (16 innings)

In Chicago, Sammy Sosa singled home the lone run in the bottom of the 16th inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 1-0 win over the Houston Astros. Todd Wellemeyer (1-0) pitched two perfect innings of relief for the win. Corey Patterson had three hits for Chicago.

Ricky Stone (4-1) was the loser, allowing one run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

In Los Angeles, Kevin Brown scattered six hits over eight shutout innings as the Dodgers blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0.

Brown (7-1) won his sixth straight decision, striking out six and walking none.

Eric Gagne picked up his 19th save of the season and 27th consecutive, dating back to last year, with a scoreless ninth.

Giants 2 Rockies 1

In San Francisco, Jesse Foppert pitched seven solid innings and drove in a run with a triple as the Giants edged the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Foppert (3-4) allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Padres 8 Diamondbacks 7

In San Diego, Lou Merloni’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the winning run as the Padres edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-7.

Ryan Klesko homered and drove in two runs for the Padres, while Gary Bennett had two RBI. Sean Burroughs added three hits for San Diego.

Veteran Jesse Orosco (1-1) got the win, allowing one run on two hits in 2/3 innings.

Matt Herges got the last three outs for his second save.

Scott Service (0-1) was the loser, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings.

Luis Gonzalez homered, had three hits and drove in four runs for the D-Backs. Alex Cintron had three hits and two RBI.
