NEWPORT, Wales, 2 June 2003 — England’s Ian Poulter won the Wales Open at Celtic Manor after a closing 70 for an 18-under-par 270 total earned him a three-stroke victory yesterday.
Poulter, who shared the lead from the first day after a course record-equalling 65 and retained it by the end of each round, won $411,100 for his fourth European Tour title in as many seasons on the circuit.
Moseley (69) bogeyed the last after a wayward drive to share second with South Africa’s Darren Fichardt and Jonathan Lomas of England who both had 68s.
Perry Remains on Course
for Second Straight Win
In Dublin, Ohio, overnight leader Kenny Perry shot a two-under-par 70 to remain clear of the Memorial Tournament field on Saturday as he bids to win for the second week running.
The 42-year-old, who cruised to victory at last week’s Colonial, stands on 13-under 203 after three rounds and leads two-time US Open winner Lee Janzen (71) by two strokes.
Spain’s Jose Maria Olazabal shot the day’s lowest round (66) in blustery conditions to move into a tie for third on eight-under 208 with Fiji’s Vijay Singh (72) and South African Retief Goosen (74), all three being former major winners.
Sorenstam Shoots 66 and Reaffirms
Her Dominance on LPGA
In Aurora, Illinois, Annika Sorenstam set the pace and Rosie Jones could not keep up. Sorenstam fired a 6-under-par 66 to open a two-stroke lead over Mhairi McKay after Saturday’s second round of the $1.2 million LPGA golf tournament.
One week removed from missing the cut in her historic appearance on the PGA Tour, Sorenstam has reaffirmed her dominance on the LPGA Tour. She followed Friday’s course-record 62 with another very solid round and is at 16-under 128 after 36 holes over the Stonebridge Country Club. Jones equaled Sorenstam with her own 62.
