DUBAI, 4 June 2003 — A court in the United Arab Emirates has sentenced a French mother to six months in jail for having sex outside marriage, her lawyer said yesterday.
Touria Tiouli, 39, a Muslim of Moroccan origin, was also given a $275 fine for drinking alcohol, Ali Abdullah Al-Shamsi said. However, the divorcee had been allowed to leave the country in April despite being accused of prostitution after she made rape allegations against three Emiratis.
One of the men was given the same jail sentence and fine as Tiouli, another a fine of $275 for drinking alcohol and the third the same amount for covering up for his friends. Tiouli said she had been raped by three men who offered to drive her home from a disco in Dubai last October. She filed charges the following day but the men, UAE citizens, accused her in turn of being a prostitute.
