CHICAGO, 7 June 2003 — Two days after his corked bat controversy, Sammy Sosa delivered a run-scoring single in the first inning to pave the way for the Chicago Cubs’s 8-1 rout of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Interleague play Thursday. That was the Dominican-born slugger’s only hit of the game, although he did score a run in the third following Ramon Martinez’s double.

Chicago picked up seven runs in the third, all charged to Dewon Brazleton (1-5). Matt Clement (3-6) tossed seven innings of seven-hit ball for the win.

In San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Montreal Expos scored three times in the bottom of the 14th inning to edge the Anaheim Angels 8-7 in a thriller. Anaheim appeared to have the game won when it plated two runs in the top of the 14th but Jose Vidro and Ron Calloway singled off Mickey Callaway (1-4) to win it for the home side.

In Atlanta, Javy Lopez belted a seventh-inning homer to snap a 4-4 tie as the Braves thumped the Texas Rangers 8-4. Lopez rocked Aaron Fultz (1-1), the win going to Jung Bong (5-0).

Rockies 7 Indians 4

In Denver, Colorado, Larry Walker’s fifth-inning single plated the deciding runs as the Rockies defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-4. Walker tagged CC Sabathia (4-3), who was charged with six of the seven Colorado runs. Jason Jennings (4-5) worked seven innings for the win, striking out six.

In San Diego, the Padres (18-43) recorded a 5-1 thumping of the Detroit Tigers (16-41) to pull a few percentage points ahead of their fellow also-rans in the standings.

Mariners 5 Phillies 4

In Philadelphia, Mike Cameron homered off Jose Mesa (1-4) with two aboard in the top of the ninth inning to give the streaking Seattle Mariners a 5-4 win over the Phillies. Julio Mateo (1-0) worked two innings in relief of Joel Pineiro to earn the decision.

Pirates 5 Bruins 4

In Pittsburgh, Kenny Lofton homered and then sacrificed to plate the winning run as the Pirates edged the Boston Red Sox 5-4 to snap a three-game losing skid. Ramiro Mendoza (1-2) took the loss.

Marlins 2 Athletics 0

In Miami, the Florida Marlins edged the Oakland Athletics 2-0 with Alex Gonzalez having a hand in both runs. Rookie Dontrelle Willis (4-1), an Oakland native, outdueled Ted Lilly (3-4) to notch the victory.

In Cincinnati, Hideki Matsui homered and doubled three times to plate three runs while Robin Ventura knocked in three more as the New York Yankees destroyed the Reds 10-2 to move back into top spot in the AL East.

Cardinals 13 Blue Jays 5

In St Louis, former Blue Jay Woody Williams tossed 7 1/3 no-hit innings as the Cardinals overwhelmed Toronto 13-5. Orlando Hudson ended his no-hit bid with a sharp single before he was retired on a double play.

Astros 11 Orioles 1

In Houston, Morgan Ensberg and Brian Hunter both collected four RBI as the Astros roughed up the Baltimore Orioles 11-1 to clinch a series sweep. Omar Daal (4-6) lasted just two innings in taking the loss.

In Phoenix, Frank Thomas homered to put Chicago on the board before doubling in the first extra inning off Scott Service (0-2) to give the White Sox a 3-2 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In Los Angeles, Cesar Izturis’s seventh-inning single plated the winning run as the Dodgers rallied to defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-2. Kevin Brown (8-1) tossed seven innings of five-hit ball for the win. The loss went to Darrell May (0-2), who worked into the eighth.
