MERIDEN, England, 7 June 2003 — Britain’s Colin Montgomerie missed the cut for a second successive week after he shot a 75 in his second round at the British Masters yesterday and left his US Open preparation in tatters. His round left him at four-over-par 148 and he will miss the cut for a second successive week for the first time in five years.
Fellow Briton Greg Owen, seeking his first Tour victory, set the early second-day pace on eight-under-par 136 after a four-under-par 68. He was later joined by Australia’s Richard Green who had a 66 after birdies at his last three holes.
Germany’s Marcel Siem was one stroke behind the pair, while South Africa’s Darren Fichardt was on six under. Former European No. 1 Lee Westwood, who has been struggling with his form, livened up his day with his first professional hole-in-one on the par-three fifth.
Gamez Rebounds From Disappointment in Potomac
In Potomac, Maryland, American Robert Gamez carded a 5-under-par 66 on Thursday for a one-stroke lead over 1999 champion Rich Beem and Notah Begay at the PGA Capital Open. On Wednesday Gamez lost a playoff in qualifying for next week’s US Open.
A few players with experience playing in the wind were two strokes back at 68, including former British Open champion Paul Lawrie and Niclas Fasth of Sweden. Also carding 68s were Hal Sutton, Rory Sabbatini of South Africa, Glen Hnatiuk, Patrick Sheehan and Tom Gillis.
Sorenstam Three Shots Back of Han
In Wilmington, Delaware, coming off a wire-to-wire victory last week at the Kellogg-Keebler Classic and two weeks removed from her historic appearance at the PGA Colonial, Annika Sorenstam opened with a one-under par 70 Thursday at the Dupont Country Club. The unspectacular round left Sorenstam tied for sixth, three shots behind leader Hee-Won Han of South Korea. Wendy Ward and Joanne Mills are tied for second after carding three-under 68s. They are one shot ahead of Grace Park of South Korea.
