CHICAGO, 8 June 2003 — All eyes were on Sammy Sosa but it was New York’s Jason Giambi who took center stage to lead the Yankees to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Interleague play on Friday. Sosa appeared despite being handed an eight-game suspension earlier Friday for using an illegal corked bat against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Tuesday.

The Cubs slugger, who can continue playing after filing an appeal, collected a single while striking out twice in four trips to the plate. The Yankees scored twice in their first at-bats thanks to a Giambi homer off Carlos Zambrano (5-5) with Derek Jeter aboard.

Giambi plated a third run two innings later with a sacrifice fly. Ramon Martinez and Corey Patterson took David Wells (8-2) deep to account for all the Chicago scoring.
