BOSTON, 13 June 2003 — The Boston Red Sox batters made life easy for three-time Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez, putting up seven second-inning runs in a 13-1 pasting of the St. Louis Cardinals in Interleague play on Wednesday.

Martinez, making his first appearance since May 15, was lifted after tossing three innings of two-hit ball, the win going to John Burkett (4-3), who went the rest of the way.

The Sox had a season-high 19 hits, Johnny Damon collecting four of them and three RBI.

In New York, Roy Oswalt started it and Billy Wagner closed out as a record six Houston Astros’ hurlers combined to no-hit the New York Yankees 8-0.

It was the first time in nearly 7,000 games dating back to 1958 that the Yanks failed to collect a hit in a game and the first time that more than four pitchers combined on a no-hitter.

In Detroit, Kevin Brown improved to a National League best 9-1 as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Tigers 3-1. Brown tossed seven innings of five-hit ball, striking out seven, with Eric Gagne closing out for his 23rd straight save.

In Toronto, Roy Halladay won his club-record ninth straight game, the Blue Jays downing the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5. Halladay (9-2) tossed eight innings of eight-hit ball, striking out nine along the way.

In Cleveland, rookie Jody Gerut’s sixth inning homer off Adam Eaton (2-5) proved to be the difference as the Indians edged the lowly San Diego Padres 3-2. C.C. Sabathia (5-3) surrendered 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings to notch the victory.

In St. Petersburg, Aaron Boone’s ninth-inning single off Jesus Colome (1-3) scored the deciding run as the Cincinnati Reds knocked off the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-6.

Diamondbacks 4 Royals 3

In Kansas City, Danny Bautista’s seventh-inning double plated the deciding run as the Arizona Diamondbacks dumped the Royals 4-3 to leave once red-hot Kansas City at just .500 (31-31) for the season.

In Minneapolis, Corey Koskie banged out four of Minnesota’s 15 hits and drove in a run as the Twins drubbed the Colorado Rockies 7-4. Kyle Lohse (6-4) allowed a single run in six innings to notch the victory, Jay Payton taking him deep for the lone score.

In Arlington, Cliff Floyd homered and singled twice to drive in five runs as the New York Mets thumped the Texas Rangers 8-2.

Giants 11 White Sox 4

In Chicago, Barry Bonds and Pedro Feliz homered to carry the San Francisco Giants to an 11-4 humiliation of the White Sox.

Both tagged loser Mark Buehrle (2-10), with Feliz’s blast coming with the bases full.

In Baltimore, the Chicago Cubs hardly missed suspended slugger Sammy Sosa, plating seven runs in a 7-6 win over the Orioles in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain. The O’s made it close with a four-run eighth inning, much of it played in the rain.

Winner Matt Clement (4-6) was gone by then, as was loser Omar Daal (4-7), who lasted just five frames.

In Oakland, the Atlanta Braves belted five homers, all served up by Ted Lilly (3-5), in an 11-6 rout of the Athletics. Rafael Furcal, Javy Lopez, Marcus Giles, Andruw Jones and Vinny Castilla all went deep for Atlanta.

In Seattle, Livan Hernandez tossed seven innings of seven-hit ball as the Montreal Expos won their sixth straight game, downing the Mariners 3-1.

In Anaheim, the Angels rode a four-run sixth inning to a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Benji Gil took Brett Myers (5-6) deep to highlight the frame.

Marlins 6 Brewers 5

In National League play in Milwaukee, Luis Castillo and Derrek Lee homered as the Florida Marlins hung on to defeat the Brewers 6-5. Milwaukee loaded the bases with one out in the ninth inning but could not push across the tying run.
