CAIRO, 16 June 2003 — The Egyptian Parliament gave its initial approval yesterday to a bill to create a national council to protect human rights, a parliamentary source said. The final text should be adopted “in the coming days” and must then be approved by President Hosni Mubarak, the source added, requesting anonymity.
The council will aim to “reinforce and develop the protection of human rights and to ensure they are respected,” the state news agency Mena said.
