NEW YORK, 17 June 2003 — Mike Mussina tossed eight solid innings and Robin Ventura’s two-run double in the sixth inning rallied the New York Yankees to a 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Interleague play on Sunday.

The victory gave the Yankees a sweep of the three-game series and New York has now won four straight games since being no-hit by six Houston pitchers on Wednesday.

Mussina (9-4) allowed two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking one.

Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save as the Yankees won all three games between the teams, their first meeting since the 1964 World Series.

Woody Williams (8-2) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with six walks and two strikeouts. Ventura’s double keyed a four-run sixth inning for the Yankees.

Hideki Matsui had two hits and drove in a run for New York, while Jason Giambi and Ruben Sierra drove in the other runs.

In Toronto, rookie Reed Johnson led off the 10th inning with his second home run of the game, giving the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs.

In Detroit, Mike Sweeney hit a three-run double in a five-run fifth inning to lead the Colorado Rockies past the Tigers 5-4. Jay Payton homered for Colorado.

Dodgers 4 Indians 3

In Cleveland, Shawn Green drove in three runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to their sixth straight win, a 4-3 decision over the Cleveland Indians. Paul Lo Duca had two hits to extend his hitting streak to 23 games.

Pirates 9 Devil Rays 5

In St. Petersburg, Jack Wilson had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 9-5. Aramis Ramirez and Jason Kendall both drove in two runs for the Pirates.

Orioles 5 Brewers 4

In Baltimore, Tony Batista and Deivi Cruz both homered to give the Orioles a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Rodrigo Lopez (1-3) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits over 6 2/3 innings in his first start since May 1.

In Chicago, Oliver Perez (2-3) allowed five hits over 6 2/3 shutout innings to lead the San Diego Padres past the White Sox 1-0. Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his first save in two years.

Mark Loretta singled in the lone run in the third inning. Jon Garland (4-6) allowed one run on three hits in eight innings.

Diamondbacks 12 Twins 8

In Minneapolis, Robby Hammock homered, had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Minnesota Twins 12-8. Tony Womack had four hits and two RBI for Arizona.

Royals 5 Giants 4

In Kansas City, Mike Sweeney hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Royals past the San Francisco Giants 5-4. Angel Berroa added three hits for K.C. Mike MacDougal (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Red Sox 3 Astros 2 (14 innings)

In Boston, Manny Ramirez drove in the winning run with a single in the 14th inning, giving the Red Sox a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros. Nomar Garciaparra had four hits for Boston.

Athletics 9 Expos 1

In Oakland, Eric Byrnes homered and drove in three runs to lead the A’s past the Montreal Expos 9-1. Ramon Hernandez also homered for Oakland. Tim Hudson (5-2) allowed one run on six hits over seven innings.

In Anaheim, Steve Trachsel pitched a one-hitter and Jeromy Burnitz hit a pair of homers to lead the New York Mets to an 8-0 win over the Angels.

In Seattle, Bret Boone drove in both Seattle runs as the Mariners edged the Atlanta Braves 2-1. Gil Meche (9-3) got the win, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

In Arlington, Mike Lowell hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs to lead the Florida Marlins past the Texas Rangers 10-4.

Ivan Rodriguez and Luis Castillo both had three hits and drove in a run for Florida.
