NEW YORK, 20 June 2003 — Roger Clemens came within five outs of his first career no-hitter but did not even record a win on Wednesday, the New York Yankees defeating the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 1-0 in an American League marathon lasting 12 innings.
Marlon Anderson lined a single to left field on a 3-2 pitch from Clemens with one out in the eighth inning to end his attempt at the no-hitter, five days after the 40-year-old Yankees pitcher became baseball’s 21st 300-game winner.
“I’ve never thrown one since I started playing ball and I got on the mound when I was seven,” Clemens told reporters. “If a no-hitter happens, that’s great, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it.”
Clemens went eight shutout innings, allowing that one hit with nine strikeouts and two walks.
Mariano Rivera followed with two shutout innings before Chris Hammond (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings to get the victory.

In Detroit, Jason Davis tossed a seven-hitter to lead the Cleveland Indians past the Tigers 4-1.
Davis (6-5) gave up one run with three strikeouts. Ben Broussard’s seventh-inning double broke a scoreless tie while Josh Bard had three hits for Cleveland.
Jeremy Bonderman (2-10) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.
Eric Munson homered and had three hits for Detroit.
Blue Jays 6 Orioles 2
In Baltimore, Roy Halladay pitched a six-hitter over seven innings to win his club record 10th straight start as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Orioles 6-2.
Halladay (10-2) struck out five and walked none before Aquilino Lopez pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season. Mike Bordick drove in two runs for Toronto.
White Sox 3 Red Sox 1
In Chicago, Esteban Loaiza tossed a six-hitter over eight innings to win his 10th game of the season as the White Sox edged the Boston Red Sox 3-1.
Loaiza (10-2) gave up one run while striking out six and walking one. Billy Koch pitched the ninth for his ninth save.
Royals 8 Twins 6
In Kansas City, Carlos Beltran had three hits and drove in two runs to lead the Royals to an 8-6 triumph over the Minnesota Twins.
Joe Randa had three hits and an RBI for the Royals while Michael Tuckers drove in two runs.
Chris George (8-4) gave up five runs on 10 hits in five innings for the win and Mike MacDougal’s scoreless ninth secured his 15th save of the season.
Mariners 2 Angels 0
In Seattle, Freddy Garcia tossed a five-hit shutout over eight innings to guide the Mariners to a 2-0 victory over the Anaheim Angels.
Garcia (8-6) struck out three and walked three to win his fifth straight start.
Athletics 4 Rangers 3 (11 innings)
In Oakland, Scott Hatteberg singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Athletics a 4-3 triumph over the Texas Rangers.
Keith Foulke (4-0) picked up the victory with two shutout innings.
