TAMPA, 25 June 2003 — Damian Rolls hit a pair of homers off 300-game winner Roger Clemens and Victor Zambrano tossed seven solid innings as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays edged the New York Yankees 4-2 in American League action on Monday.

Rolls went 3-for-3 and drove in all four runs for Tampa Bay as the Devil Rays ended the Yankees three-game winning streak. Rolls hit a three-run homer in the second inning, his first home run since August 2001 against the Chicago White Sox, and added a solo shot in the fifth.

Zambrano (4-4) allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Travis Harper pitched the eighth and Lance Carter got his 12th save with a scoreless ninth.

Alfonso Soriano led off the game with a home run for the Yankees, while Hideki Matsui drove in the other New York run with a fourth inning double. Clemens (7-5) remained stuck on 300 wins, allowing four runs on five hits over seven innings.

Red Sox 3 Tigers 1

In Boston, Tim Wakefield tossed six scoreless innings before leaving with an injury as the Red Sox downed the Detroit Tigers 3-1. Wakefield (6-3) allowed four hits and struck out five and walked two before straining his lower back.

Kevin Miller homered and drove in two runs as the Red Sox won for just the third time in seven games. Mike Timlin allowed one run on two hits in the ninth but still got his second save.

Jeremy Bonderman (2-11) allowed two runs on eight hits over six innings to take the loss. Alex Sanchez had two hits and drove in Detroit’s lone run.

Blue Jays 13 Orioles 4

In Toronto, Carlos Delgado had three hits and drove in four runs, giving him a major league leading 80 RBI on the season, as the Blue Jays mauled the Baltimore Orioles 13-4. Shannon Stewart and Josh Phelps both homered for Toronto, while Tom Wilson had three hits and drove in three runs.

Reed Johnson added three hits and scored three times, while Doug Davis (4-4) took advantage of the 19-hit attack to get the win. He went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Omar Daal (4-9) allowed nine runs, eight earned, on 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings. Tony Batista and Luis Matos both homered for the Orioles.

Athletics 3 Rangers 1

In Arlington, Scott Hatteberg hit a three-run double in the top of the ninth inning to rally the Oakland Athletics past the Texas Rangers 3-1. Ricardo Rincon (4-3) tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the win, while Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Rafael Palmeiro’s bases-loaded walk accounted for the lone Ranger run. Ugueth Urbina (0-3) allowed the three ninth inning runs and took the loss.

Vargas Shuts Out

Pirates in Expos Victory

Rookie pitcher Claudio Vargas tossed a three-hitter over eight shutout innings as the Montreal Expos blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 in National League action in Montreal.

Vargas (4-3) allowed just two singles and a double while striking out two and walking one before just 5,641 fans at Olympic Stadium in a game that witnessed Edwards Guzman’s first home run for almost two years.

Rocky Biddle pitched a hitless ninth to finish up and earn his 20th save in 23 chances. Guzman hit his homer in the third inning, his first since Aug. 9, 2001 when he played for the San Francisco Giants at Cincinnati, to give the Expos all the offense they would need.

Jose Vidro and Brian Schneider drove in the other Expo runs, as Montreal won for just the third time in 11 games. Jeff Suppan (5-7) allowed three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks to take the loss. The Pirates have lost two straight after winning six of their previous eight games.

Rockies 5 Padres 1

In San Diego, Shawn Chacon became the first 11-game winner in the National League and Larry Walker homered to lead the Colorado Rockies past the Padres 5-1. Chacon (11-3) went seven innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking four.

Chris Stynes drove in a pair of runs for the Rockies. Kevin Jarvis (0-2) was the loser, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Klesko homered for San Diego.

Diamondbacks 7 Astros 6

In Phoenix, Alex Cintron homered and Quinton McCracken drove in three runs as the Arizona Diamondbacks edged the Houston Astros 7-6. Luis Gonzalez drove in a pair of runs for the D-Backs, who scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and then had to survive a four-run Houston ninth.

Ricky Bottalico (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the win. Brady Raggio got the last out for his first save. Brad Lidge (4-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits in 2/3 innings. Jeff Bagwell had two hits and drove in two runs for the Astros.

Giants 3 Dodgers 2 (11 innings)

In San Francisco, Benito Santiago singled home Barry Bonds with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Giants a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a showdown between two of the top teams in the NL West.

Bonds led off the inning with a walk and then stole second, enabling him to become the first player in major league history to hit 500 home runs and steal 500 bases.

Santiago followed with a single to left to end the game off Dodger closer Eric Gagne.

Gagne (1-2) allowed one run on one hit in 1/3 inning to take the loss. Felix Rodriguez (3-0) pitched a scoreless 11th for the win. Andres Galarraga hit a solo homer for the Giants, while Marquis Grissom added a run-scoring single. The Dodgers tied the game with two runs in the ninth on just one hit and an error.
