JEDDAH, 27 June 2003 — Two-Way Tie Al-Faf chess tourney Willy Sabungan of Shamrock and Bernie Roxas of Barnies tied for first after the 14th round. The two tournament forerunners scored 27 points to remain on top of the 25 players of the Al Faf hotel chess tournament (Series 9-phase one round robin) conducted by Community Chess Club every Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dr. Motaz El-Fadil of Bahlas Medical Center is two points behind the leaders, while at third are CPA Gerry Calixto of HILTI and Jimmy De Leon of Alma Glasss, both with 22 1/2 points. Gary Abadines of Jeddah Cable is at 21 points.

Newcomer Roxas scalped CCC regular players Calixto and Irshad Hussain of Trans Desert who were beaten in straight sets , while his game against Sabungan was broken at 1-1. Standing of other players: 5. Russel Sayat 16 1/2 points, 6. Baby Joseph 16 points, 7. Raul Mayo 15 points, 8. Ahmed Khatooa and Engineer Froilan Miro with identical 13 1/2 points, 9. Marvin Franco 13 points (1 pending game), 10. Amin Khan and Raul Ilagan tied at 12 12.

Chess players who skipped the ongoing phase one or round-robin event, applied their option to be chartered in the struggle bracket of the Stepladder Knockout Final include Najib Uddin, Bong Baluyot, Gil Buensuceso and Rod “Pogi” Manansala. The 9th series Phase One or the round-robin event will end on June 27 while the Stepladder Knockout Final will start on July 11. The Community Chess Club has declared Series Ten open.
