MIAMI, 4 July 2003 — The avenging Atlanta Braves, walloped 20-1 by Florida one day earlier, used six pitchers on Wednesday to limit the Marlins to one run in 13 innings to secure a 2-1 victory in the National League.

Horacio Ramirez did the bulk of the work, tossing seven innings of six-hit ball. But the win went to Kevin Gryboski (5-3), who worked the 12th before giving way for closer John Smoltz to notch his 30th save of the season.

Rafael Furcal was the hitting hero, his 13th-inning homer off loser Armando Almanza (4-5) plating the decisive run.

Rookie Florida left-hander Dontrelle Willis held the Braves in check for eight innings in his bid for his club record eighth straight win. He lowered his ERA to 2.13.

Cubs 1 Phillies 0

In Philadelphia, Sammy Sosa homered on the first pitch of the ninth inning as the Chicago Cubs triumphed 1-0 to snap the seven-game winning streak of the Phillies.

Sosa connected off loser Turk Wendell (1-2), the third Philadelphia pitcher. Matt Clement and three Chicago relievers held the Phillies to one hit by David Bell.

Reds 4 Pirates 3

In Pittsburgh, Reggie Taylor and Barry Larkin doubled and singled in the top of the ninth inning as the rallying Cincinnati Reds edged the Pirates 4-3. Both runs were charged to reliever Mike Williams (0-3). Felix Heredia (4-0) worked part of the eighth for the win, with Scott Williamson closing out for his 20th save in 23 chances.

Giants 4 Cardinals 1

In St. Louis, Barry Bonds belted two solo homers to carry the San Francisco Giants to a 4-1 victory over the Cardinals.

The first blast from Bonds was served up by loser Garrett Stephenson (4-8). The San Francisco slugger now has 637 career home runs, putting him 23 behind Giants favorite Willie Mays for third on the all-time list.

Expos 11 Mets 4

In New York, the Montreal Expos shook off an early 4-0 deficit to thump the Mets 11-4. Capitalizing on four New York errors, Montreal pushed across five runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth.

Jae Weong Seo (5-4) failed to finish the fourth after being charged with four Montreal runs.

Rockies 6 Diamondbacks 2

In Denver, Jason Jennings surrendered two hits in nearly seven innings on the mound as the Colorado Rockies thumped the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2.

The fast-improving Jennings (8-6) struck out three as he won for the fifth time in six outings. Jay Payton collected three hits and three RBI to pace Colorado.

Brewers 5 Astros 3 (11 innings)

In Houston, Eric Young’s 11th-inning single off Ricky Stone (5-3) proved decisive as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Astros 5-3. Valerio De Los Santos (1-2) notched the victory with two innings in relief of Milwaukee starter Wayne Franklin. Leo Estrella closed out for his first career save.

Padres 4 Dodgers 3 (10 innings)

In Los Angeles, Mark Loretta’s single in the first extra inning plated the go-ahead run as the San Diego Padres outlasted the Dodgers 4-3. Closer Eric Gagne (1-3) took the loss. Matt Herges (2-1) notched the victory with an inning in relief.

In Detroit, Carlos Delgado homered twice and Roy Halladay worked seven innings for his 12th straight victory to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-2 win over the lowly Detroit Tigers in the American League on Wednesday.

The Jays snapped a four-game losing skid to hand the Tigers their 62nd loss of the season.

All-Star Game frontrunner Delgado took loser Adam Bernero (1-12) deep in the first inning before adding a second solo blast in the fifth, giving him a major league-best 28 home runs and 91 RBI on the season.

He became the ninth player in MLB history to drive in 90-plus runs before the All-Star break. The mid-season record of 103 was set by Hank Greenberg in 1935.

Mariners 13 Athletics 0

In Oakland, Joel Pineiro tossed eight innings of three-hit ball to help the Seattle Mariners crush the Athletics 13-0.

Pineiro (9-5) struck out six while walking three. Bret Boone had the hot bat, doubling and singling to plate two of the first three Seattle runs.

Angels 5 Rangers 0

In Anaheim, John Lackey tossed his first major league shutout as the Angels beat the Texas Rangers 5-0. Lackey (6-7) went all the way, allowing four hits while striking out a career-high eight. Tim Salmon took loser Joaquin Benoit (3-4) deep with a man aboard to score two runs. It was the 51st loss of the season for Texas.

White Sox 8 Twins 6 (12 innings)

In Chicago, Frank Thomas’ second homer of the game with newly-acquired Roberto Alomar aboard gave the White Sox an 8-6 extra-inning victory over the Minnesota Twins which completed a three-game series sweep.

Red Sox 5 Devil Rays 4

In St. Petersburg, three times Cy Young Award winner Pedro Martinez tossed seven innings of six-hit ball as the Boston Red Sox edged the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4.
