OAKLAND, 5 July 2003 — Barry Zito scattered 10 hits over 7 1/3 innings and Billy McMillon had two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth which drove in the winning run, to lift Oakland to a 5-2 American League victory over Seattle Thursday.
Erubiel Durazo also had two hits and an RBI for the Athletics, who salvaged a split of the four-game series against the AL West leaders. The Mariners lead Oakland by six games in the division.
Zito (8-5) won for the first time in five starts by holding the Mariners to two runs, despite giving up the 10 hits while striking out five and walking none. Keith Foulke struck out two batters in 1 1/3 innings for his 22nd save of the season.
Ryan Franklin (6-7) allowed five runs, four earned, and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings to take the loss. Edgar Martinez tied the game for the Mariners with a solo homer in the fourth. Bret Boone added three hits and drove in a run.
Devil Rays 6 Red Sox 5 (10 innings)
In Tampa Bay, Marlon Anderson singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Devil Rays edged the Boston Red Sox 6-5. Al Martin tied the game with a two-run homer in the eighth and Travis Harper (1-4) struck out three batters in two scoreless innings of relief for the win. Manny Ramirez clubbed two homers for the Red Sox, including a two-run blast in the fifth. David Ortiz and Trot Nixon also homered. Mike Timlin (3-3) gave up the winning run and four hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Orioles 6 Blue Jays 5
In Baltimore, Jeff Conine hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning and the Orioles held on for a 6-5 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays. Jason Johnson (7-3) won his second straight decision after allowing four runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. Jorge Julio struck out two batters in 1 1/3 inning of relief for his 17th save of the season.
Eric Hinske picked up a solo homer for the Jays in the second and sparked a three-run, eighth-inning rally with a sacrifice fly.
Royals 3 Tigers 2
In Kansas City, Ken Harvey singled home the winning run in the sixth inning to steer the Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Michael Tucker put the Royals on the board with a solo homer in the fifth. Jeremy Affeldt (5-4) held the Tigers to two runs and five hits in seven innings for his second win in three starts and Mike MacDougal converted his 22nd save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

In Minnesota, Shane Spencer drove in two runs, including the winner in the third inning, and CC Sabathia pitched the complete game to give the Cleveland Indians a 4-1 triumph over the Twins. Sabathia (8-3) gave up one run, a homer by Matt LeCroy in the ninth, and four hits in his first complete game of the season.
He struck out five batters and walked one. Jody Gerut cracked his ninth homer of the season, a solo drive in the eighth. Kenny Rogers (7-4) gave up three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.

In Anaheim, Hank Blalock hit two homers to lead the Texas Rangers past the Angels 6-5. Tony Mounce (1-2) recorded the win, going 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Ugueth Urbina pitched a scoreless ninth for his 23rd save of the season. Juan Gonzalez had two hits and drove in two runs for Texas. Kevin Appier (6-5) was the loser, giving up five runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. Bengie Molina homered for the Angels.

Hunting Ground for Expos
In Atlanta, Michael Barrett hit a two-run homer and Claudio Vargas won his third straight start to help the Montreal Expos stay unbeaten in Atlanta this season, downing the struggling Braves 5-4 in the National League Thursday. The Expos, who opened the season with a three-game sweep at Turner Field, moved within six games of the NL East-leading Braves with the win.
Atlanta has lost three of four and six of its last nine. The Braves are 16-19 against NL East opponents this season, including 0-4 at home against the Expos. Vargas (6-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings and Julio Manon retired the final batter of the game for his first big league save. Endy Chavez had three hits and two RBI for the Expos. Andruw Jones clubbed a solo homer to put the Braves on the board in the seventh.

In St. Louis, Edgar Renteria blasted a three-run homer to spark an eight-run second inning as the Cardinals cruised past the San Francisco Giants 9-5. Albert Pujols, with a three-run shot, and Scott Rolen, with a solo drive, also homered in the second. Jason Simontacchi (6-4) allowed five runs and seven hits while striking out five batters in six innings.
Phillies 12 Cubs 2
In Philadelphia, Placido Polanco drove in three runs, including the game-winner with a fifth-inning double, to propel the Phillies to a 12-2 rout of the Chicago Cubs.
Jimmy Rollins, who scored four times in the game, and Jim Thome both added RBI doubles in the fifth. Brett Myers (8-6) won his third start in a row after allowing two runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Damian Miller gave the Cubs an early lead with a two-run homer in the second. Carlos Zambrano (6-7) surrendered five runs and eight hits in six innings.

In Houston, Jeff Bagwell crushed a three-run homer in the third inning as the Astros defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3. Geoff Blum added a three-run homer in the fifth and scored twice. Jeriome Robertson (7-3) won his sixth consecutive decision by holding the Brewers to three runs and seven hits in a career-high 7 1/3 innings before Octavio Dotel claimed his third save of the season. Matt Kinney (6-7) lost for the third time in four starts after giving up six runs and five hits in six innings.

In Pittsburgh, Matt Stairs recorded a pair of two-run homers to power the Pirates to an 8-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Reggie Sanders added two hits, including a solo homer in the fifth. Josh Fogg (5-3) allowed four runs, three earned, and five hits in five innings and Mike Williams gave up two runs and three hits before closing the game with his 22nd save of the season.
Aaron Boone drove in four runs, including two with a single in the ninth to bring the Reds within one run.
Diamondbacks 8 Rockies 4
In Colorado, Chad Moeller homered and drove in three runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to an 8-4 victory over the Rockies. Shea Hillenbrand and Robby Hammock launched solo homers in the second and Steve Finley added a two-run shot in the third. Brandon Webb (5-2) held the Rockies to one run and eight hits while striking out six batters in eight innings. Greg Vaughn and Charles Johnson had solo homers for the Rockies.

In Los Angeles, Adam Eaton pitched six solid innings as the San Diego Padres overcame the Dodgers 7-4. Eaton (3-7) went six innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on nine hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Rod Beck pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the season.
