NEW YORK, 6 July 2003 — The Boston Red Sox cracked seven home runs, the most ever allowed by the New York Yankees, to romp to a 10-3 victory in the American League on Friday.

Jason Varitek, David Ortiz and Bill Mueller all had two homers and Manny Ramirez added another for the Red Sox, who won for the eighth time in 11 games. Varitek totaled four hits and four RBI while Ortiz, Ramirez and Mueller all had two hits and drove in two runs.

Derek Lowe (10-3) allowed three runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win in the first Independence Day game between the two rivals since 1983. It was Lowe’s seventh straight victory, a career best. Alfonso Soriano and Karim Garcia homered for the Yankees, who lost for only the fourth time in 20 games. Hideki Matsui added two hits and an RBI.

In Baltimore, Brook Fordyce had a two-run double that helped the Orioles score eight times with two outs in the eighth inning in an 8-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Devil Rays 4 White Sox 3

In Tampa Bay, Carl Crawford slugged a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Devil Rays edged the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Julio Lugo tied the game in the seventh with a solo home run before Brian Dauback gave Chicago the lead with his fifth homer of the season.

In Minnesota, Justin Morneau and Corey Koskie both hit two-run homers to pace the Twins to a 9-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. Rick Reed (4-8) won for the first time in five starts by holding the Indians to one run and six hits in seven innings.

Angels 1 Athletics 0

In Oakland, Benji Gil had two hits and scored the only run to give the Anaheim Angels a 1-0 victory over the Athletics.

Aaron Sele (5-6) won his second straight start with five scoreless innings.

Royals 9 Tigers 8

In Kansas City, Michael Tucker had four hits and drove in three runs to lead the Royals past the Detroit Tigers 9-8.

Ken Harvey added two hits and drove in three runs for the Royals, who survived a three-run Kansas City rally in the ninth. Nate Field (1-0) went 1 1/3 shutout innings for the win while Mike MacDougal claimed the last out for his 23rd save of the season.

In Arlington, Juan Gonzalez notched a three-run homer as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3. RA Dickey (4-3) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits with two strikeouts for the win.
