NEW YORK, 7 July 2003 — David Ortiz homered, scored three runs and drove in three more to inspire the Boston Red Sox to a 10-2 rout of the New York Yankees in the American League on Saturday.

The Red Sox, who crushed New York 10-3 on Friday to start this four-game series, surged within two games of the first-place Yankees in the AL East.

Trot Nixon homered, scored three runs and drove in two more for Boston while Johnny Damon drove in three runs.

Ramiro Mendoza (2-3) pitched five shutout innings for the win, allowing six hits while striking out one and walking two. Roger Clemens (8-6) was rocked for eight runs, seven earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Jason Giambi and Jorge Posada homered for the Yankees, who trailed 8-0 in the second. Hideki Matsui added three hits.

Devil Rays 3 White Sox 2

In Tampa Bay, Javier Valentin homered in the fifth inning to help the Devil Rays edge the Chicago White Sox 3-2.

Jorge Sosa (2-6) tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since April 19 and Lance Carter gave up two runs before closing the game with his 14th save of the season.

Magglio Ordonez homered and Frank Thomas had an RBI double to bring the White Sox within one run in the ninth. Esteban Loaiza (11-4) allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings.

Indians 13 Twins 2

In Minnesota, Casey Blake smacked two homers, including a three-run drive in the ninth inning, and drove in seven runs to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 13-2 romp over the Twins. Matt Lawton and Milton Bradley also homered for Cleveland. Brian Anderson (6-6) won his third straight decision, giving up two runs and six hits in seven innings, while Joe Mays (8-6) allowed five runs and six hits in three innings.

Matt LeCroy and Corey Koskie, with his second homer in as many days, went deep for the Twins.

Orioles 9 Blue Jays 2

In Baltimore, Jeff Conine homered twice and drove in five runs as the Orioles pounded the Toronto Blue Jays 9-2.

Melvin Mora had four hits and drive in two runs and Brook Fordyce added a solo homer in the sixth. Sidney Ponson (11-5) worked eight innings, allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out four batters and walking two. Cory Lidle (10-7) dropped his third straight start after giving up seven runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. Greg Myers and Shannon Stewart picked up solo homers for the Blue Jays.

Tigers 9 Royals 5

In Kansas City, Alex Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to help the Detroit Tigers to a 9-5 victory over the Royals. Mike Maroth (4-12) won for the third time in four starts after giving up four runs and eight hits in 7 2/3 innings. Jamie Walker allowed one run and a hit in the ninth before recording his second save of the season. Dmitri Young, with a solo shot in the first, and Kevin Witt also homered in the win. Brad Voyles (0-2) gave up six runs and eight hits in four innings while Ken Harvey, Raul Ibanez and Michael Tucker homered for the Royals.

Mariners 3 Rangers 2 (10 innings)

In Arlington, Dan Wilson drove in the winning run with a 10th-inning single to lead the Seattle Mariners past the Texas Rangers 3-2. Ichiro Suzuki and Jeff Cirillo both had two hits and drove in a run for the Mariners. Rafael Soriano (1-0) tossed a scoreless inning for the win while Shigetoshi Hasegawa pitched a scoreless 10th for his third save of the season.

Juan Gonzalez homered for Texas. Ugueth Urbina (0-4) allowed a run on three hits in the 10th to take the loss.

Angels 6 Athletics 3

In Oakland, Tim Salmon clubbed two homers to steer the Anaheim Angels to a 6-3 victory over the Athletics. Salmon drove in four runs while Ramon Ortiz (10-6) seized the win, going six innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Troy Percival pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season. Aaron Harang (1-3) gave up four runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings for the loss. Billy McMillon and Eric Chavez homered for Oakland.
