MONTREAL, 9 July 2003 — Livan Hernandez pitched his second complete game of the year to help the Montreal Expos end a three-game losing streak with an 8-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.
Hernandez (8-6) allowed one run while striking out 10 and walking one as the Expos handed the Phillies their fourth straight loss in a game that featured the benches clearing in the fourth inning.
Philadelphia manager Larry Bowa was ejected after Phillies starter Brandon Duckworth hit Hernandez with a pitch. Players from both benches came onto the field but no punches were thrown.
Duckworth also left the game after hitting Hernandez, who was the seventh straight player to reach base in the five-run inning that gave the Expos the lead. Duckworth (3-3) allowed five runs on five hits in three-plus innings to take the loss. Jimmy Rollins hit a solo homer in the first for the Phillies lone run. Orlando Cabrera had three hits, including a sixth-inning home run, and scored three times to lead the 10-hit attack.

In New York, Chipper Jones hit two home runs for the second day in a row and drove in four runs to give the Atlanta Braves a 7-3 win over the Mets. Jones, who has driven in 11 runs in the past four games, hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the eighth. Robert Fick added a three-run drive in the sixth inning. Horacio Ramirez (8-2) won his seventh straight decision after allowing three runs and four hits in a complete-game effort. Jae Weong Seo (5-5) dropped his third straight start, giving up six runs and eight hits in six innings.
Astros 7 Reds 1
In Houston, Richard Hidalgo hit a three-run triple in the third inning to lead the Astros to a 7-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Eric Bruntlett hit his first major league home run, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, while Morgan Ensberg added his 16th of the season in the seventh inning. Roy Oswalt (5-4) won his third straight by holding the Reds to one run and three hits in six innings. Ryan Dempster (2-6) gave up six runs and six hits in four innings.
Cubs 6 Marlins 3
In Chicago, Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run home run that helped the Cubs to a 6-3 victory over the Florida Marlins.
Matt Clement (6-7) pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs and five hits before Joe Borowski closed the game for his 17th save.
Josh Beckett (3-4) was the loser after giving up six runs and 10 hits in six innings. He struck out six batters and walked four.
Ivan Rodriguez and Derrek Lee hit homers for the Marlins.
Brewers 9, Pirates 2
In Milwaukee, Brady Clark and Eric Young drove in two runs each to give the Brewers a 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Wayne Franklin (5-5) held the Pirates to a run and two hits in six innings for the win while Kip Wells (2-4) was the loser after giving up seven runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Diamondbacks 14 Rockies 6
In Arizona, Shea Hillenbrand crushed three home runs and drove in a career-high seven runs to power the Diamondbacks to a 14-6 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Hillenbrand hit solo homers in the fourth and fifth innings and a three-run shot in the sixth. Stephen Randolph (4-0) gave up one run and didn’t allow a hit in three innings of relief for the win. Todd Helton and Preston Wilson homered to give the Rockies a five-run lead through three innings.
Giants 5 Cardinals 1
In San Francisco, Marquis Grissom and Barry Bonds both homered and also drove in all five runs to help the Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1. Grissom drove in three runs while Bonds had the other two. Jerome Williams (4-1) pitched a complete game seven-hitter, allowing one run with four strikeouts and one walk.
Garrett Stephenson (4-9) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings to take the loss.
Padres 7 Dodgers 1
In San Diego, Oliver Perez pitched eight scoreless innings and Ryan Klesko homered to help the Padres to a 7-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Perez (3-3) struck out eight batters and gave up five hits, including a solo homer to Paul Lo Duca that broke up his shutout bid in the ninth inning.
Andy Ashby (2-5) gave up five runs and eight hits in four innings for the loss.
Matsui Grabs Winning Run
as Yankees Edge Red Sox
Hideki Matsui scored the winning run from third base as the New York Yankees edged the Boston Red Sox 2-1 after an error by Todd Walker in the bottom of the ninth decided on Monday’s only American League game.
The Yankees salvaged a split of the four-game series with the Red Sox and have a four-game lead on Boston at the top of the AL East. The teams meet again later this month.
The four-game series between the two rivals attracted 220,026 fans, the largest attendance for a four-game series since Yankee Stadium was remodeled 28 years ago.
New York lost two of its star players in the game, Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter, after both were hit on the hand by pitches from Boston starter Pedro Martinez.
Matsui and Karim Garcia both singled to lead off the ninth innings off Byung-Hyun Kim (3-7). Jorge Posada was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases, before Robin Ventura struck out.
Curtis Pride hit a grounder to Walker that the Boston second baseman bobbled and his throw to the plate to try and get Matsui out was late and high, giving the Yankees the win.
