JEDDAH, 10 July 2003 — Participants at the weeklong workshop on learning disability for teachers and students from the Education College received their certificates yesterday from Hana Shamma, the assessment and educational specialist at Maharat Center.
The workshop was sponsored by the British Business Group, Jeddah, which provides a variety of services and information to the Saudi community and particularly to British businessmen working or visiting Saudi Arabia.
The workshop focused on the different kinds, causes and symptoms of learning difficulties endured by children and how to diagnose, treat and teach each child according to their needs
Salha Al-Sheikhi, a third-year English student at the Education College, enrolled in the workshop after attending a joint seminar by Maharat Center, Help Center and Jeddah Institute for Speech and Hearing at the college.
“I learned many things I didn’t know about dyslexia (reading difficulty) and dysgraphia (writing difficulty) for example, and that will help me when I become a teacher,” she told Arab News.
“It changed my understanding of the problem, that it’s not about low intelligence, and that it should be approached in a certain way,” said Dalia Al-Rimi, another student.
