MONTREAL, 15 July 2003 — Rookie Dontrelle Willis notched his eighth straight victory as the Florida Marlins pasted the Montreal Expos 11-4 on Sunday.

Willis (9-1), who was a late addition to the National League’s All-Star squad, tossed five innings and gave up six hits for the win, while striking out four.

He was charged with two runs, which raised his ERA from 1.98 to 2.08.

Catcher Ivan Rodriguez drove in five runs on four hits, two of them served up by Expos starter Claudio Vargas (6-5), who lasted just 2 2/3 innings.

All-Star Mike Lowell chipped in with his 28th homer in the third inning, with Derek Lee connecting in the eighth inning to end the scoring. Plate umpire Marty Foster left the game after being hit high in the mask by a pitch in the fourth. He reportedly suffered a mild concussion.

Cardinals 3 Padres 1

In St. Louis, the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 in a game that also included a bench-clearing brawl after Cardinals’ All-Star Albert Pujols was beaned by Adam Eaton.

Pujols and Eaton were ejected for their part in the fight, as were San Diego catcher Gary Bennett and manager Bruce Bochy.

Kerry Robinson drove in the first Cards run, then scored in the seventh inning on Mike Matheny’s sacrifice off loser Mike Matthews (3-4). Former starter Jason Simontacchi (8-4) notched the victory on 2/3 of an innings of relief.

Mets 4 Phillies 3

In New York, Jason Phillips hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the New York Mets a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies that ended a six-game losing streak. It was Philadelphia’s first loss in six outings. The Phillies had tied the game at 3-3 on Mike Lieberthal’s single in the top of the ninth. Tom Glavine gave up eight hits in six innings for New York, but the win went to closer Armando Benitez (3-3).

Astros 5 Pirates 2

In Houston, the Astros scored in each of the first four innings on their way to a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tim Redding (6-8) tossed six innings of five-hit ball for the victory while striking out five before Billy Wagner pitched a flawless ninth for his 25th save in 28 chances. Aramis Ramirez’s eighth-inning homer accounted for both Pittsburgh runs.

Reds 10 Brewers 8 (12 innings)

In Milwaukee, Aaron Boone hit a two-run homer off Leo Estrella (2-2) in the top of the 12th inning as the Cincinnati Reds rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Brewers 10-8. The victory gave the Reds a sweep of their three-game series. They had lost their previous eight games before the Brewers’ series.

Felix Heredia (5-0), the last of seven Cincinnati pitchers, tossed 2 1/3 flawless innings to notch the victory.

Ken Griffey Jr. walked in his only turn at the plate as a pinch hitter, so his run of five successive games with a home run remains alive because he did not have an official at-bat.

Dodgers 9 Rockies 3

In Denver, Jolbert Cabrera’s three-run double sparked a five-run first inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers hammered Colorado 9-3, snapping the Rockies’ four-game win streak. Denny Neagle (2-3) was tagged with all five runs to take the loss.

Wilson Alvarez (1-1) pitched five innings, giving up five hits while striking out four for the victory, his first win in more than a year. Diamondbacks 7 Giants 4

In Phoenix, the Arizona Diamondbacks shook off an early 4-0 deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants 7-4.

After San Francisco scored four times off rookie Brandon Webb (7-2) to open the game, Arizona responded with three runs in their half of the inning and four more in the second. San Francisco’s Jim Brower (5-2) was tagged with six of the seven runs to take the loss. Single-season home run record holder Barry Bonds was 0-for-2, snapping his five-game home run streak.

Braves 7 Cubs 2

In Chicago, Robert Fick’s two-run double sparked a five-run sixth inning as the Atlanta Braves romped 7-2 over the Cubs for their major league-best 61st win of the season.

Fick’s double was served up by Carlos Zambrano (6-8), who was charged with all seven of Atlanta’s runs.

Atlanta pitcher Shane Reynolds (7-4) tossed six innings to record his 110th career victory.

Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa collected two hits in five at-bats to raise his season’s average to .312.
