RIYADH, 18 July 2003 — The Filex Malubay darters of Dado Corpuz defeated strong contender COD Wakaray of Peter Maranan in their first encounter in the fourth week of the ongoing Inter-Cargo Dart Challenge 2003 held the Cues Recreation Center here.
This event is organized by the Expat Darters of Saudi Arabia (EDSA), an association of dart aficionados based in the capital city and sponsored by the one of the top sea and air cargo forwarders in the Kingdom.
Filex’s starter Doy del Moral opened the singles with heavy fires silencing COD’s Vic Briones with a 110 outshot but Ronnie Dizon and Emil Lindo fired back in the second and third singles for a 3-1 COD lead. Adrian Tolentino retaliated with a D16 over a helpless Domeng Cunanan followed by another slaughter by Edwin Canales of Jun Angara. COD’s Ely Martos avenged his previous loss against Romy Artieda and blanked him with a D8 outing in the sixth singles. Ding Roxas repeated the scenario to Pepe Ilarde only to find Sammy Abarientos losing to Henry Faustino in the last match-up that resulted in a 4-4 ending.
In the first doubles, the towering pair of Romy Artieda and Rudy Asirot proved earned 2 points for Filex at the expense of Jun Angara and Emil Lindo. COD’s top gun Ely Martos paired with Ronnie Lacson in the second doubles and could only produce Ton40 once against the steady Edwin Canales and Adrian Tolentino.
With the momentum in Filex’s side Tolentino accurately hit his D4 final target giving an advantageous 8-4 lead into the last doubles.
Filex needed a win to stop the match going into the last leg, the team match. COD’s third pair of Sammy Abarientos-Domeng Cunanan overcame the pressure to beat the tough combination of Doy del Moral and Henry Faustino.
Abarientos, one of the promising darters of COD, fired the fatal D20 outshot.
COD deployed Ely Martos, Sammy Abarientos, Emil Lindo and Domeng Cunanan against Filex’s top four Romy Artieda, Edwin Canales, Adrian Tolentino and Henry Faustino in the pressure-laden decider.
Filex, playing spiritedly, fired the best from its arsenal and gave COD trouble throughout. Both sides exchanged equal darting until Adrian Tolentino calmly unleashed a game-winning throw that finished COD. Filex prevailed with an 11-6 final score.
Mario Guanzon made another record of 15 darts while highest outshots were recorded by Orencio Vargas, 119, Peter Lachica, 116 and Doy del Moral, 110. Oliver Cruz was the lone bull’s-eye king awardee.
SkyFrieght STR team managed by Ed de Leon finally scored for the first time in a no-match contest against Metro Star 2 Expo, 15-2 in the first game.
