SAN FRANCISCO, 21 July 2003 — Barry Bonds struck his major league-leading 31st homer of the season, the 644th of his career, to guide the San Francisco Giants to a 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the National League Saturday.
Bonds is now 16 homers from tying his godfather, Willie Mays, for third place on the all-time list. Only Hank Aaron (755) and Babe Ruth (714) are ahead of the pair.
Yorvit Torrealba also homered for the Giants, who received five solid innings from All-Star starter Jason Schmidt before he left with soreness in his arm in the sixth.
Schmidt (10-4) allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He will be re-evaluated to determine the cause of the soreness. Four relievers completed the eight-hitter, including Tim Worrell, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his 21st save of the season.

In Los Angeles, Danny Haren pitched six strong innings for his first major league win as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Dodgers 3-1. Haren (1-2) gave up one run on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

In Atlanta, Russ Ortiz labored through five innings but still recorded the victory as the Braves defeated the New York Mets 7-4. Ortiz (13-4) allowed three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks while John Smoltz collected the last out for his 35th save of the season.

In Cincinnati, Lance Berkman homered and drove in five runs to lead the Houston Astros to a 9-8 victory over the Reds. Richard Hidalgo and Morgan Ensberg also homered for the Astros, who almost blew a 9-1 lead when the Reds scored twice in the eighth and five in the ninth.

In Miami, Kerry Wood tossed a two-hitter to lead the Chicago Cubs past the Florida Marlins 1-0. Wood (10-6) struck out eight and walked five in pitching his third complete game of the season. Alex Gonzalez’s sacrifice fly in the fifth accounted for the only run.

In Pittsburgh, Ben Sheets pitched seven shutout innings as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Pirates 1-0. Sheets (8-7) allowed seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Danny Kolb pitched two shutout innings for his first save of the season while John Vander Wal’s RBI double scored the lone run.

In Philadelphia, Tomas Perez recorded a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 11th inning to lead the Phillies past the Montreal Expos 4-3. Jim Thome and Pat Burrell homered for the Phillies while Thome and Placido Polanco both had three hits. Jose Mesa (5-5) tossed a scoreless 11th for the win.

In San Diego, Adam Eaton and four relievers combined on an eight-hitter as the Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-0. Eaton (5-7) allowed six hits over 6 2/3 innings for the win and Rod Beck pitched the ninth for his ninth save of the season. Mark Kotsay and Ryan Klesko drove in the runs as San Diego ended a five-game losing streak.
Yankees Mark ‘Old-Timers Day’ by Beating Indians
The New York Yankees celebrated ‘Old-Timers Day’ with a 7-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the American League on Saturday.New York won its fourth straight game with five Hall of Famers in attendance for the festivities at Yankee Stadium - Whitey Ford, Reggie Jackson, Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra and Dave Winfield.
David Wells (12-3) allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and no walks to get the win, improving to 19-4 lifetime against Cleveland. Mariano Rivera went 1 1/3 innings of relief to pick up his 17th save of the season.
Jason Giambi had a rare three-run single in the fifth to rally the Yankees from a 4-2 deficit. Derek Jeter raced all the way home from first base to score the third run on the play. Alfonso Soriano and Raul Mondesi also homered for the Yankees, who handed the Indians their fourth loss in a row.

In Minneapolis, Brad Radke won for the first time since May 16 as the Minnesota Twins beat the Oakland Athletics 9-4.
Radke (6-9) allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two, to end a 10-start winning drought. Doug Mientkiewicz pounded a two-run homer while Matthew LeCroy had a three-run double and Dustan Mohr drove in two runs for the Twins.

In Boston, Trot Nixon’s 10th-inning single gave the Red Sox a 5-4 triumph over the Toronto Blue Jays. Byung-Hyun Kim (4-7) tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the win. Bill Mueller homered for Boston.

In St. Petersburg, Doug Glanville had three hits and drove in two runs to help the Texas Rangers defeat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 7-3. Michael Young added two hits and two RBI to the Texas attack while Joaquin Benoit (5-4) seized the win by allowing three runs on six hits over five innings.

In Baltimore, Sidney Ponson recorded a career-high 13th victory of the season as the Orioles beat the Anaheim Angels 8-4.
Ponson (13-4) allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings while Hector Carrasco went 2 1/3 shutout innings to earn his first save. Luis Matos homered and drove in three runs while BJ Surhoff also had three RBI. Kevin Appier (7-7) gave up seven runs on seven hits in 1 1/3 innings as the Angels lost their third straight in the four-game series.

In Chicago, Tony Graffanino cracked a pinch-hit three-run homer in the seventh inning to help rally the White Sox past the Detroit Tigers 6-2. Joe Crede drove in two runs for Chicago while Jon Garland (7-7) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings. Eric Munson homered for Detroit.

In Kansas City, Darrell May tossed a three-hitter over eight innings as the Royals scored a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners. May (5-4) allowed one run, struck out two batters and walked four.
