BOSTON, 22 July 2003 — Pedro Martinez pitched seven scoreless innings and took advantage of an early 9-0 lead to power the Boston Red Sox to a 9-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League on Sunday.

Martinez (7-2) allowed three hits and struck out eight and walked none to record the victory as the Red Sox split the four-game series with the Blue Jays.

The Red Sox gave Martinez more than enough support in the early going, scoring once in the second, five times in the third and three more in the fourth to grab a 9-0 advantage.

Nomar Garciaparra had two hits, including a three-run homer, and drove in four runs to pace the Red Sox attack.

Kevin Millar and Manny Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox while Trot Nixon had two hits and drove in two runs. Damian Jackson added three hits.

Brandon Lyon tossed two innings of relief and gave up four unearned runs in the ninth. John Wasdin (0-1) lasted 2 2/3 innings in his second start of the season and was tagged for six runs and six hits in the loss.

Eric Hinske had two RBI for Toronto.

Royals 7 Mariners 5 (10 innings)

In Kansas City, Carlos Beltran cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Royals to a 7-5 triumph over the Seattle Mariners.

Reliever Kris Wilson (5-0) retired both batters he faced in the 10th to set up the win. Reliever Arthur Rhodes (2-2) gave up two hits, including the walk-off homer in the 10th.

Dan Wilson and John Mabry homered to help Seattle rally from a five-run deficit after six innings.

Twins 6 Athletics 4

In Minneapolis, Torii Hunter drove in the winning run with a two-run homer in the fifth inning to pace the Minnesota Twins to a 6-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Doug Mientkiewicz smacked a three-run homer in the first for the Twins. Kenny Rogers (8-5) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings and Eddie Guardado finished the game with a scoreless inning for his 22nd save of the season.

Erubiel Durazo had two hits, including a two-run double in the sixth. Ted Lilly (5-8) surrendered six runs and eight hits in a seven-inning start.

Yankees 7 Indians 4

In New York, Jorge Posada recorded a two-run homer in the sixth inning to help the Yankees to a 7-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Alfonso Soriano had two hits, including a two-run double in the sixth, for the Yankees. Mike Mussina (11-6) allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings for his first win in four starts and Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save of the season.

Jake Westbrook (4-5) gave up one unearned run and three hits in five innings for the Indians.

Devil Rays 15 Rangers 4

In Tampa Bay, Aubrey Huff and Al Martin clubbed three-run homers in the fourth inning as the Devil Rays destroyed the Texas Rangers 15-4.

Rocco Baldelli added a solo shot in the fourth and Travis Lee produced a three-run blast in the fifth. Jorge Sosa (3-7) won for the second time in three starts after giving up two runs and four hits in seven innings.

Todd Greene notched a solo homer in the third. Starter Tony Mounce (1-4) allowed six runs, one unearned, and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.

Orioles 7 Angels 6

In Baltimore, David Segui smashed a sixth-inning grand slam to help the Orioles edge the Anaheim Angels 7-6.

Jason Johnson (8-4) allowed one run and six hits in 7 1/3 innings for the win. Jorge Julio gave up one run before retiring the final two batters for his 21st save of the season.

White Sox 10 Tigers 1

In Chicago, Frank Thomas slugged two home runs as the White Sox thrashed the Detroit Tigers 10-1.

Magglio Ordonez, Paul Konerko and Jose Valentin also homered for the White Sox. Esteban Loaiza (12-5) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings for the win.

Eric Munson homered in the fifth for the Tigers. Wil Ledezma (3-3) was hammered for seven runs and 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
