HAMBURG, 23 July 2003 — Vitali Klitschko was on Monday given the green light by doctors to return to the boxing ring, an important pre-condition for a rematch with Lennox Lewis.
German doctor Volker Steinkraus said after an examination on Monday that he was surprised how well the Ukrainian’s face injuries from the first bout with Lewis last month had healed.
“You don’t have to be cautious in the ring,” Steinkraus told Klitschko.
Klitschko, 32, was defeated by Lewis in a World Boxing Council title bout in Las Vegas when the ring doctor controversially declared Klitschko unfit to continue after the sixth round due to facial cuts that reportedly hampered his vision.
Lewis had named an examination of Klitschko an important pre-condition for the rematch. Steinkraus said he will compile all his material from Monday’s examination for Lewis.
