KITZBUEHEL, Austria, 27 July 2003 — Unseeded Nicolas Massu of Chile overwhelmed ninth seed Mariano Zabaleta 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals of the Generali Open yesterday to set up a title showdown with Guillermo Coria of Argentina.

Both Massu and second seed Coria will both be gunning for their second successive tour titles in Sunday’s final of the 925,000-euro clay event. Massu won the Dutch Open while Coria clinched Stuttgart last Sunday.

Coria charged through with a ruthless 6-1, 6-2 win over 13th seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain.

The 21-year-old, who faced his Spanish opponent exactly a week ago in the last four at Stuttgart, needed less than an hour on the sun-baked clay to sweep aside Lopez.

Coria is brimming with confidence, having won Stuttgart and the Hamburg Masters in May. He also reached the last four at the French Open.

Roddick Crushes Malisse, Thomann Continues Run

In Indianapolis, top seed Andy Roddick bludgeoned his way into another semifinal on Friday as his former housemate Nicolas Thomann looked forward to the biggest payday of his unheralded career.

Wimbledon semifinalist Roddick surged past Belgian Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-1 in their quarterfinal at the RCA championships, while Frenchman Thomann earned his place in the last four with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over German Nicolas Kiefer.

American Roddick, 20, faces Sjeng Schalken in his semifinal, with the prospect of Thomann awaiting him in today’s final if the 30-year-old can extend his remarkable run with success over Paradorn Srichaphan.

The second-seeded Thai eased past unseeded Australian Scott Draper 6-4, 6-2 in the later quarterfinal played at the Indianapolis tennis center.

Dutch third seed Schalken, Roddick’s opponent yesterday, continued his progress with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over American Robby Ginepri, although Schalken needed eight match points to seal victory.

Clijsters, Capriati Reach Semis, Dokic Ousted

In Palo Alto, California, second seed Kim Clijsters overcame a shaky start to blast her way past Swiss teenager Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the Bank of the West Classic on Friday.

Third seed Jennifer Capriati recovered from a break down in the deciding set to battle past fellow American Lisa Raymond 6-1, 6-7, 6-4 but fifth seed Jelena Dokic continued her season-long slump when she was upset by qualifier Maria Vento-Kabchi 6-4, 6-3.

Clijsters, who has lost only two of her last 19 matches, will face Italy’s Francesca Schiavone, a 7-6, 6-3 victor over American Amy Frazier, in the semifinals.

The 29-year-old Vento-Kabchi played a consistent game to set up a semifinal against Capriati.

The Venezuelan effectively moved Dokic around the court and drew her into numerous errors. Dokic, who reached a career-high ranking of four last October, has only reached one semifinal in 2003.
